What does Twitter mean to you?

I discovered Twitter just over a month ago, I have 147 followers, I'm following 313 people, have posted 1050 'Tweets' and received 71 direct messages

Some or even quite a lot of Twitterers seem to have the goal of obtaining the most amount of followers. Why? I don't get it really I don't. I can't cope with the relatively small (But flattering) 147 that so nicely think my tweets are worth a glimpse and I am on here an average 12-14 hours a day. I am not having a go at anyone for chasing their own targets, it just occurs to me that all you are setting yourself up for is letting others down.

I would be very interested to hear your comments so please feel totally free to express them on this page. I am trying to discover why it is this site has become the sensation it has, I believe one of the main causes of mere 'ordinary people' are drooling over their keyboards are the hundreds of celebrities that are now actually in what essentially is really just another chat room.

Don't take me the wrong way I don't see any wrong in wanting to talk to celebrities, I think they are way more interesting than some who just talk about politics or finance all day, I never realised how hard these stars actually work, travelling up and down the country, globe trotting, learning lines, charity work, and now on top of that they have to twitter, sometimes even when on air, or travelling to the next interview they are twittering, which throws a whole new ball into the air for these performers and us to juggle with.
Why are there so many 'Famous twitterers'? What attracts them to this medium? I am genuinely interested to find out so if any of you have time to read this I am intrigued to hear what the attraction twitter holds for you. Is it an ego trip? is it the fact that you want the opportunity to get in contact with the 'Man or woman on the tweet.'

Thanks for reading I now look forward to reading your comments on 'What twitter means for you.

  1. I am new to twitter and still finding my way around and deciding why I like it LOL! I joined so I could thank Adam Woodyatt for the pics he took of my kids and me on 'This Morning', as the day was so hectice didn't have a chance. Didn't think I would be drawn in to twitter also. I don't chase celebs it is nice to read Stephen Fry's twittering, the all time master of the english language laced with intelligent humour and wit. I am surprised that there are so many celebs twittering away and so frequently I suppose it fills the minutes/hours of boredom. I have got drawn in tho and enjoy the odd twitter especially as I have to express myself in just a few words! I'm a scouser and could talk for England :). Really enjoying your twitter talk as well, so thank you for that.
